Ice Rink & Arena Water Treatment Chemicals

Effective chemical solutions for arena building maintenance

Caring for Arenas is Hard Work

Whether you’re managing an arena that hosts professional sports teams and sold-out concerts or tryouts for the bantam hockey team, your management is important. The cooling and heating systems must stay running at all times, and do so using as little water and energy as possible. As an added challenge, the age of some systems requires special care and consideration to run efficiently for as long as possible.

It's More Than Just Chemistry

You need a chemical partner who can find the right solution

Maintaining heating and cooling systems in arenas and ice rinks is a full-time job. It takes careful calculation to ensure that these systems perform, despite their age or history, and with efficient use of water and power. We’re here to help. At Guardian, we understand the need for specialized chemistry, the pressures you face for reducing budget, and that systems old and new have different requirements.

Programs for your systems: boiler water treatment, cooling tower treatment, closed loop and chiller treatment and DataGuard monitoring. Local service: Edmonton and Calgary, Toronto, Vancouver and Florida.

Solutions

Water Treatment

Water systems are critical to maintaining arenas and ice rinks. They need to perform in all conditions while minimizing utility costs. Guardian delivers the three pillars required for successful water treatment: industry-leading chemistry, responsive and knowledgeable service, and the holistic processes to ensure your systems perform at the lowest possible operating cost. This approach is grounded in decades of experience and supported by a data-driven process, giving operations and leadership the peace of mind they deserve. And we do this with health and safety as our top priority—that means everything from providing the proper training to handle the products to water management plans ensuring legionella does not cause an issue for your institution. We can help by providing chemistry that is designed to get the most out of your systems, and the service support needed to keep them working as long as possible.

While the best water systems will be perfectly balanced, we understand that sometimes not everything goes as planned. That is why we also have a suite of solutions such as defoamers, descalers and odour controllers to help get your system back on track and operating at peak performance.

Sanitizing & Disinfecting

Protect the health of everyone in and around your facilities from the visible and invisible bacteria, fungi, and other contaminants that can linger for days in the right environment. Guardian’s wide variety of solutions include several registered with Health Canada. All our hard surface cleaners, sanitizers, and disinfectants are made to ensure the cleanliness of contaminated surfaces.

Descaling

The best water systems will be perfectly balanced to minimize scale issues. However, once scale develops, it can impact the efficacy of your boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and heat exchangers. By treating this issue as soon as it’s noticed, you can prevent further negative impacts on your systems and equipment. We have the systems and people to properly treat the issue and optimize your system’s performance, no matter what condition it’s in

Frequently Asked Questions About Chemical Solutions for Arenas

What is different about water treatment in an arena?

The refrigeration plant. Arenas run a glycol or brine loop for the ice slab and a condenser water system rejecting that heat, often alongside conventional building heating. The condenser side fouls quickly because it runs continuously through the season, and fouling there shows up directly as higher compressor energy.

Why is my ice plant condenser fouling so fast?

Continuous run time, high heat rejection, and make-up water that concentrates in the tower. Scale and biofilm on the condenser both insulate the surface, so head pressure climbs and the compressor works harder for the same ice. A controlled treatment programme with monitored cycles of concentration is what holds it.

How do I know if my glycol loop needs attention?

Test the glycol, not just the level. Inhibitor packages deplete over time and glycol degrades to glycolic acid, which drops pH and turns a protective fluid into a corrosive one. A brown or acidic sample means the loop needs treating or replacing, and topping up with water only dilutes what protection is left.

Do arenas need Legionella controls?

Yes, wherever there is a cooling tower or evaporative condenser and wherever domestic hot water serves showers in dressing rooms. Towers aerosolise, and dressing room showers see intermittent use with long stagnant periods between. Both belong in the risk assessment.

What sanitation issues are specific to dressing rooms?

Intermittent heavy use, shared surfaces, wet floors and skin contact. The practical controls are a cleanable floor and bench surface, a disinfectant with a realistic contact time for the turnaround between bookings, and dilution control so staff are not guessing. Odour complaints are usually a cleaning frequency problem rather than a product problem.

Can scale affect ice quality?

Indirectly, yes. Scale on the condenser raises head pressure and reduces the plant’s capacity, so the slab is harder to hold at temperature during a busy schedule or a warm spell. The ice-making problem people report in shoulder season is often a heat rejection problem.

How do we manage water treatment with a seasonal shutdown?

Lay the systems up deliberately. Condenser water and towers need draining and cleaning, the ice plant loops need testing before restart, and heating boilers need a wet or dry layup. Idle systems full of untreated oxygenated water corrode faster than running ones.

Who does the testing in a facility with a small crew?

Our representative does the routine testing and adjustment on a service schedule and leaves the results with your operator. Arena crews are usually small and stretched across ice, building and events, so the water treatment programme has to run without needing a dedicated person.

Do you supply descaling for arena equipment?

Yes. Condenser tubes, plate exchangers, domestic hot water equipment and kitchen gear all scale at different rates, and each needs a chemistry matched to the deposit and the metallurgy. We identify the deposit before recommending an acid.
