Solvent degreasers are effective on oilfield residue, but some carry strong odours and hazardous ingredients. In an enclosed wash bay, crews breathe that air for the whole shift.
When a product’s SDS lists substances on Canada’s CEPA Toxic list, and staff are reporting odour and health effects, the product becomes a workplace problem as well as a cleaning choice.
This oilfield service company was in that position. It needed a degreaser that removed oilfield residue from its equipment without the odour and health effects of the product it was using.
Challenges
When applied, the competitor’s degreaser had a strong chemical odour, resulting in poor air quality and health effects for wash bay staff. The SDS identified harmful ingredients listed on the CEPA Toxic list. These issues prompted this oilfield service company to seek a new degreaser to remove oilfield residues without the negative health effects.
Solutions
Guardian Chemicals product, Breakaway, was introduced for testing. Side-by-side performance tests were performed on an oilfield service rig. Testing showed Breakaway eliminated noxious odours and improved perfomance.

Costs Reduced by a Minimum of 29.8%
Where 50% reduction in chemical use was observed, chemical cleaning costs were reduced by 29.8% compared to the competitive product.
