Why pMDI resin changes the release agent an OSB mill needs

OSB mills bind wood strands with resin under heat and pressure. pMDI resin bonds very well, including to the steel press platens. Without a release agent sprayed on the mat, panels can stick, surfaces can pick, and residue builds up on the press.

The release agent has its own risks. The wrong product can build up, corrode platens, create odours, or discolour the panels.

This multi-opening (daylight) OSB mill in Canada was moving from formaldehyde resin on the board face to 100% pMDI. Earlier release agent trials had caused build-up, corrosion, odours and discolouration. The mill needed a clean release at a cost-effective dose, with none of those side effects.

Challenges

This multi-opening/daylight OSB mill was converting production from formaldehyde resin on the board face to 100% pMDI. Previous mat spray release agent testing resulted in build-up, corrosion, foul odours, and panel discoloration. Any alternative solution had to eliminate these issues, result in a clean release, and be applied at a cost-effective dosage.

Solutions

Pressguard X210 was introduced using a step-down dosage to optimize panel production at minimum effective application rate for release. Spray system adjustments made to ensure adequate release agent coverage on the OSB mat.
