Why press speed sets the pace for an MDF line

In MDF production, the press is usually the bottleneck. A fibre mat goes into the press cold. Heat has to move from the platens into the core before the resin can cure. Until the core reaches temperature, the panel cannot leave the press, and the line upstream waits.

This facility was running into that limit. Press speed capped daily output. Heat moved through the mat unevenly, so panel quality varied from run to run. Running faster risked surface defects and more sanding. Holding speed meant giving up throughput.

A mat spray is applied to the mat surface before pressing. Canguard Mat Spray is designed to move heat into the core sooner, which shortens resin cure time. The trial set out to measure how much time it saved, and whether surface quality held at higher application rates.

Challenges

This MDF facility faced a pressing challenge—literally. Slow press speeds were limiting production, and uneven heat transfer led to variability in product quality. Operators couldn’t increase speed without risking defects. The plant needed a solution to boost efficiency without compromising quality.

Solutions

Guardian Chemicals partnered with this customer to test Canguard, a mat spray solution designed to improve heat transfer, reduce press cycle times, and enhance product quality. Canguard was pre-blended at 10% concentration and applied in three levels: 2g/ft², 5g/ft², and 8g/ft² on ¾” MDF. We Monitored: Time to reach boiling (100°F to 212°F), peak temperature in the press core, final surface density, and product quality.

Results

Production Gains

Press cycle times improved significantly, allowing for greater throughput. Improved heat transfer reduced resin cure time.

Improved Surface and Product Quality

Improved top-face quality with zero defects, even at higher spray levels. Reduced need for sanding.

Operator Success

Teams noted that runs were smoother and press speeds more stable.

With Canguard Mat Spray, optimized efficiency, quality, and production output—without adding risks.

Frequently asked questions

What does a mat spray do in MDF pressing?
It is applied to the mat surface before the press closes. Canguard Mat Spray is designed to improve heat transfer into the panel core. Faster heating shortens resin cure time and the press cycle.
What application rates were tested?
Canguard was pre-blended at 10% concentration and applied at 2, 5 and 8 g/ft² on ¾” MDF.
How were the results measured?
The team tracked the time for the core to rise from 100°F to 212°F, peak core temperature, final surface density and finished panel quality.
Did higher spray rates hurt surface quality?
No. Top-face quality showed zero defects at every spray level tested, and the panels needed less sanding.
