What Happens When Boiler Water Chemistry Is Neglected?

Most water treatment suppliers drop off product and move on. Scale builds, corrosion works quietly through your tubes and condensate lines, and by the time there’s a visible problem — a leak, a failed inspection, a spike in fuel costs — the damage is already done. A properly managed boiler water treatment program stops all of it before it starts.

Rising Energy Costs

Just 1/32 inch (0.8 mm) of scale raises boiler fuel use by 2–7%, driving up fuel and electricity costs.

Equipment Failures

Untreated corrosion leads to tube failures, leaks, and unplanned shutdowns that disrupt your entire operation.

Compliance Risk

Boiler systems must meet water quality and safety standards. Poor treatment puts your compliance at risk.

Shortened System Life

Without proper chemistry and monitoring, boiler components degrade faster—accelerating your capital replacement timeline.

More Than Chemicals. A Boiler Treatment Program That Actually Works.

Most water treatment suppliers deliver product and move on. You’re left guessing whether your system is protected, whether dosing is right, and whether problems are building that you can’t see yet.

Guardian technician testing boiler water on site

✓ Tailored chemistry designed for your specific boiler type, water conditions, and operating demands

✓ Scheduled on-site service visits from water treatment specialists who know your system

✓ Regular water testing and monitoring to catch problems before they become failures

✓ 24/7 remote monitoring through our DataGuard platform—so you’re never flying blind

✓ A dedicated service team that understands your facility and your operational priorities

We don’t believe in ‘deliver and done.’ Our programs are designed to protect your system and reduce your total operating cost—not just sell you chemicals.

DataGuard: Know What’s Happening in Your System—Before Problems Start

Most treatment programs rely on periodic site visits to catch problems. DataGuard changes that.

Our remote monitoring platform tracks your water treatment parameters in real time, alerting our team when chemistry drifts outside target ranges—before scale forms, before corrosion accelerates, before you get a call about a system failure.

✓ Real-time tracking of chemical and water quality parameters

✓ Automated alerts when treatment deviates from target

✓ Reduced on-site testing burden for your operations team

✓ Data-driven optimization that reduces chemical waste and operating costs

What Building Operators Say About Guardian

“Guardian Chemicals are the best. I’ve been using them for the past 8 years, no complaints. I take them wherever I go, if they aren’t onsite already. They’ll support any request you have as well as recommend what’s best for your building or plant.”

“With Guardian, knowing that the water is good in all our buildings now and our cooling towers are performing as they should be is what I value most. It wasn’t like this before we brought Guardian in.”

"Before starting with Guardian, we were experiencing issues with Legionella and Corrosion in our systems. Things have improved a lot over the last 2-3 years and we are very happy with the outcome."

Frequently Asked Questions about Boiler Water Treatment

What does a boiler water treatment program include?

A Guardian boiler treatment program includes tailored chemistry (oxygen scavengers, scale inhibitors, alkalinity management, condensate treatment), scheduled on-site service visits, regular water testing and analysis, and 24/7 remote monitoring through our DataGuard platform. Every program is designed for your specific system, water conditions, and operating requirements.

How much does a boiler treatment program cost?

Treatment costs depend on your boiler type, size, operating conditions, and water quality. As a general guideline, water treatment typically represents 2–4% of total boiler operating costs—and a properly managed program generates significant savings in energy, maintenance, and equipment life. We’ll provide transparent pricing as part of your free assessment.

Can I switch from my current water treatment provider?

Yes. We manage the transition process to ensure there’s no gap in treatment. Our team will assess your current program, recommend improvements, and handle onboarding so your system stays protected throughout the changeover.

How do I add water treatment chemicals to my boiler?

Boiler treatment is added through chemical feed pumps, direct injection into feedwater lines, or automated dosing systems. Regular testing ensures proper chemical balance and effectiveness.

How is boiler water treated?

Boiler water treatment involves filtration, chemical dosing, pH control, and blowdown management to remove impurities, prevent corrosion, and optimize system efficiency.

What areas do you serve?

Our water treatment team serves facilities throughout the Edmonton and Calgary metro areas, as well as other locations across Western Canada. Contact us to confirm coverage for your facility.

How quickly can you respond if I have a boiler emergency?

Guardian provides responsive support for active treatment program customers. Emergency support is available for urgent system issues, and our DataGuard monitoring helps detect problems before they become emergencies.

Do you work with commercial and industrial boilers?

Yes. We provide treatment programs for low-pressure and medium-pressure steam boilers, hot water boilers, condensate systems, and steam generators in commercial, institutional, and industrial facilities.

Do I need a water test before you can recommend a program?

Often not. EPCOR and the City of Calgary publish their treated water chemistry, and we use that data with your system details to design the boiler program. We add a site test when it would change the recommendation, such as confirming silica or diagnosing a system with corrosion or scale problems.

Is Calgary water the same across the city?

No. Calgary is served by two treatment plants. In 2025, water from the Glenmore plant averaged about 224 mg/L hardness and 11 mg/L chloride, while water from the Bearspaw plant averaged about 174 mg/L hardness and 5 mg/L chloride. Glenmore water is roughly 30% harder with about twice the chloride, so which plant serves your building changes the scale and corrosion plan. Edmonton water from EPCOR averaged about 174 mg/L hardness in 2025.
