What Happens When Closed Loop Systems Are Neglected

Microbiological Contamination

Stagnant closed loop water breeds bacteria and biofilm that block heat transfer surfaces and accelerate corrosion under deposits.

Efficiency Loss From Fouling

Fouling deposits insulate heat exchangers and chiller tubes, forcing your system to consume more energy to maintain temperature.

Corrosion and Equipment Failure

Without proper inhibitor chemistry, closed loop piping, coils, and heat exchangers corrode from the inside out, causing leaks and costly replacements.

Glycol Degradation

Uninhibited or degraded glycol becomes acidic over time, turning your antifreeze protection into a corrosion accelerant.

A closed loop program, not just a drum of inhibitor

System-Specific Chemistry

Every closed loop system is different — heating loops, chilled water circuits, and glycol systems each need a tailored inhibitor program. We formulate and adjust based on your metallurgy, water quality, and operating conditions.

Proactive Monitoring and Service

We don’t wait for problems. Regular testing, coupon analysis, and DataGuard remote monitoring catch drift before it becomes damage. Your system stays in control between service visits.

Glycol Management

We test glycol concentration, pH, and inhibitor reserves on a defined schedule. When your glycol degrades, we recommend the right course of action — whether that’s supplemental inhibitor, partial drain-and-refill, or full system flush.

DataGuard 2.0: Alerts Before a Loop Goes Wrong

A closed loop can sit untouched for months and look fine from outside while iron climbs and inhibitor drops. DataGuard logs the test data, compares it against the control range for that loop, and alerts you when the system or the treatment moves out of range. Guardian can also set up remote controllers so readings arrive on their own.

What Building Operators Say About Guardian

“Guardian Chemicals are the best. I’ve been using them for the past 8 years, no complaints. I take them wherever I go, if they aren’t onsite already. They’ll support any request you have as well as recommend what’s best for your building or plant.”

“With Guardian, knowing that the water is good in all our buildings now and our cooling towers are performing as they should be is what I value most. It wasn’t like this before we brought Guardian in.”

"Before starting with Guardian, we were experiencing issues with Legionella and Corrosion in our systems. Things have improved a lot over the last 2-3 years and we are very happy with the outcome."

Frequently Asked Questions about Closed Loop Water Treatment

What is closed loop water treatment?

It is the chemistry and monitoring that keep a sealed heating, chilled water or glycol loop from corroding and fouling. Because a closed loop has little make-up water, small volumes of inhibitor go a long way, and small leaks or top-ups can undo the program without anyone noticing.

How often should closed loop water be tested?

Quarterly testing suits most loops, with more frequent checks after a repair, a top-up or a system flush. What matters is catching a change in inhibitor level, iron or biology while it is still small.

What is the difference between open and closed loop treatment?

An open system such as a cooling tower loses water to evaporation, so it concentrates minerals and needs blowdown control. A closed loop should lose almost nothing, so the treatment focus moves to corrosion control, inhibitor levels and finding leaks or unrecorded top-ups.

How do I know if my glycol needs replacing?

Glycol degrades over time and turns acidic, which attacks the metal it was meant to protect. Testing for inhibitor level, pH and degradation products tells you whether the charge can be restored or should be replaced. We test and tell you which it is.

Do you treat both heating and chilled water loops?

Yes, along with chiller barrel and evaporator circuits, fan coil and radiant loops, and glycol systems.

Can you take over from our current provider?

Yes. We review your current program and system records, propose a replacement and plan the changeover so the loop is never left unprotected.

Do I need a water test before you can recommend a program?

Often not to get started. Most municipal utilities publish their treated water chemistry, and we use it with your system details. A sample from the loop itself is a different matter: for an existing system, testing what is circulating is usually the fastest way to see what has been happening.

Do you supply pre-treatment equipment too?

Yes. Guardian specifies, installs and services softeners, filtration and chemical feed equipment as well as the chemistry, so one vendor handles the water from inlet to loop.
