Frequently Asked Questions About Commercial Car Wash Chemicals
Presoak, high and low pH detergents, a friction or foam product for in-bay and tunnel applications, wheel and tyre cleaner, drying agent, and a spot-free rinse. Touchless, friction and wand-wash bays each need a different balance, and the same chemistry rarely performs well across all three.
Dissolved solids in the final rinse water drying on the paint. Spot-free rinse depends on RO or DI water, so spotting usually means the RO membranes are fouled, the DI resin is exhausted, or rinse water is being blended with untreated water somewhere. Check the rinse water conductivity first.
Chemistry and dwell time doing the work the brush would do. A high pH presoak lifts organic road film, a low pH stage handles mineral film and brightens, and both need enough contact time at the right concentration before the high-pressure rinse. Touchless bays that clean poorly are usually short on dwell, not on pressure.
It ties up active ingredients in detergents so you spend more chemical for the same clean, it leaves mineral film on the vehicle, and it scales heaters, nozzles and high-pressure equipment. In a wash running on untreated hard water, softening usually pays back through chemical savings alone.
Anaerobic bacteria producing sulphide in a tank that holds organic load with low oxygen between busy periods. It is the complaint that costs customers, and it is not a masking problem. It needs the biology in the reclaim system controlled, and in many cases odour control chemistry dosed to the tank rather than sprayed in the bay.
Measure it per car rather than per month, then work on dilution accuracy, nozzle and tip wear, dwell time and water quality. Most washes find more savings in application control than in unit price, and a worn tip quietly overdosing is common enough to be worth checking first.
Drying agent concentration, surface tension on the final rinse, and blower coverage acting together. Under-applied drying agent gives streaks, over-applied gives film and haze. Rinse water quality sets the floor for what the drying agent can achieve.
Yes. Scale on heaters, in high-pressure lines and at nozzles changes flow and spray pattern, which changes coverage and dwell. Wash quality complaints that appear gradually over a season are often a scaled equipment problem rather than a chemistry problem.
Yes. Standardising chemistry, dilution settings and reporting across sites makes wash quality consistent and makes cost per car comparable between locations, which is usually the number multi-site operators want and rarely have.
