Water Treatment for the
Food & Beverage Industry
Effective water treatment solutions for food & beverage manufacturers
A Controlled Environment is Critical to Production
In your industry, facility conditions directly impact your product; if the ideal temperature can’t be maintained, it affects your bottom line. You need chemistry that keeps product quality high and utility use low, all while ensuring the safety of all your staff.
You Need Chemistry You Can Count On
And that means a chemical partner who understands what’s at stake
Your systems are designed to support your highly specialized manufacturing processes, and the safety and quality of your products depend on their ability to perform. That means you need a chemical partner who not only understands those processes but will work to find the best solutions possible. At Guardian, we’re here to ensure your chemistry never lets you down.

Water Treatment
Your heating and cooling systems need to work effectively while minimizing utility costs. Guardian delivers the three pillars required for successful water treatment: industry-leading chemistry, responsive and knowledgeable service, and the holistic processes to ensure your systems perform at the lowest possible operating cost. This approach is grounded in decades of experience and supported by a data-driven process, giving operations and leadership the peace of mind they deserve. And we do this with health and safety as our top priority—that means everything from providing the proper training to handle the products to water management plans ensuring legionella does not cause an issue for your institution. We can help by providing chemistry that is designed to get the most out of your systems, and the service support needed to keep them working as long as possible.
While the best water systems will be perfectly balanced, we understand that sometimes not everything goes as planned. That is why we also have a suite of solutions such as defoamers, descalers and odour controllers to help get your system back on track and operating at peak performance.
Sanitizing & Disinfecting
If you can’t protect the health and safety of your staff, then you can’t protect the continuity of your production. Protect the health of everyone in and around your facilities from the visible and invisible bacteria, fungi, and other contaminants that can linger for days in the right environment. Guardian’s wide variety of solutions include several registered with Health Canada. All our hard surface cleaners, sanitizers, and disinfectant chemicals are made to ensure the cleanliness of contaminated surfaces.
Descaling
The best water systems will be perfectly balanced to minimize scale issues. However, once scale develops, it can impact the efficacy of your boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and heat exchangers. By treating this issue as soon as it’s noticed, you can prevent further negative impacts on your systems and equipment. We have the systems and people to properly treat the issue and optimize your system’s performance, no matter what condition it’s in.
We Do What Needs to Be Done
Ensuring production quality and safety means constant monitoring of your systems. That’s why it’s so important to work with someone who is proactive about understanding your needs and finding solutions when conditions change.
At Guardian Chemicals, we know that no two systems are the same, and each solution needs to be customized. It’s not just our lab resources or our team’s technical knowledge that sets us apart, but also our ability to offer unparalleled service and support.
Programs for your systems: boiler water treatment, cooling tower treatment, closed loop and chiller treatment and DataGuard monitoring. Local service: Edmonton and Calgary, Toronto, Vancouver and Florida.
We don’t believe in ‘deliver-and-done’. True benefits revolve around the consistency of program execution, which is why we’re there when you need us both for regular servicing and emergency support for life.

Our experts know your industry and will seek to understand the unique challenges of your business. Let’s talk.

Your systems and processes are interconnected. We’ll arrange a site visit to understand the bigger picture.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chemical Solutions for Food and Beverage Processing
Boiler water feeding process steam, cooling towers and chillers, any closed glycol loop on refrigeration, and process water where it contacts product. The boiler side gets the most attention because steam quality and the chemistry you can use in it are both constrained by food contact rules.
Only those cleared for that use, and the clearance is what you have to be able to show an auditor. We supply the product with its regulatory status and documentation so it can go into your HACCP or food safety plan without a gap. Assuming a standard industrial boiler chemical is acceptable is a common finding.
Two causes usually act together: mineral scale from the water side and protein or sugar deposits from the product side. They need different chemistry, so a CIP programme built for one will not touch the other. Identifying the deposit is the step that turns a frustrating clean into a predictable one.
Verify it rather than assume it. Measure the concentration in the return line, confirm temperature and flow at the far end of the circuit, and swab after. CIP failures are almost always one of concentration, temperature, time or turbulence being out of spec while the cycle still completes normally.
Proteins, surfactants from cleaning chemistry carried into the drain, and high solids in the effluent. Foam in an aeration basin or a DAF unit reduces capacity and can trip level controls. A low-dose defoamer matched to the foam type handles it without depressing oxygen transfer.
Usually yes, and the cooling tower is the first place to look, by running higher cycles of concentration with treatment sized for the resulting scaling potential. Beyond that, reusing final rinse water as initial rinse elsewhere is common, but it has to be assessed against your food safety plan rather than just plumbed.
Control boiler feedwater hardness and maintain the treatment programme, then descale on condition rather than on a schedule. Scale on a retort, kettle or pasteuriser jacket raises steam demand and lengthens cycles, and long cycles in a food plant are throughput, not just energy.
Product regulatory status and label claims, safety data sheets, written procedures with dilution and contact time, and dated test and service records. Third-party audits generally focus on whether documented procedure matches actual practice, so the records have to reflect what is done on the floor.
Yes. Cleaners, sanitizers and disinfectants, descalers and defoamers come from the same supplier and the same representative as the boiler and cooling programme, which is why many plants consolidate. It also means one person is looking at the whole water and chemistry picture rather than a slice of it.
We offer the chemistry and support that make better food and beverage production possible.
