Choosing the wrong cleaner costs more than the drum. It costs cleaning time, chemical consumption, damaged surfaces and avoidable exposure. Conventional solvents with low flash points and high VOC content put your crew at risk and can put you offside Canada’s VOC regulations.
Water-based cleaners handle light soils. Solvent-based cleaners dissolve heavy oils and hydrocarbon deposits that water-based products cannot touch. The soils that stop Alberta operations — bitumen, heavy oil, crude, tar, and oil sands deposits carrying sand and clay along with the hydrocarbon — usually need a hybrid of the two.

How to Choose the Right Industrial Cleaner
Industrial cleaners fall into three main categories, and the right choice depends on your deposit:
Water-based cleaners are best for light soils, water-soluble deposits, and applications where flammability and VOC exposure are primary concerns. They’re non-flammable, low-odour, and often the most economical option. Guardian’s E-5 is a Green Seal certified water-based cleaner that replaces multiple products.

It depends on the deposit, not the equipment. Bitumen, heavy oil and oil sands soils that carry sand usually need a hybrid such as Breakaway VF, or a high flash point solvent such as TerraSol ULV. Lighter soils are handled by a water-based cleaner. Tell us what you are cleaning and we will recommend against your actual deposit.
It depends on the product. Hybrid degreasers contain both solvent and water, and those generally would not be used too far below 0°C outdoors. In a heated wash bay or shop there is no difference. Traditional solvent-based degreasers are generally not affected by cold, indoors or out. Tell us where the work happens and we will match the product to the conditions.
