In Your Industry, Safety is Everything

The chemistry required for metalworking and machining walks a fine line. It needs to be as effective as possible, but it—and its application—needs to be safe for everyone involved. That’s true whether its hot tank chemicals for paint, rust, oil, and carbon removal, or the water treatment chemicals that ensure product quality during production.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chemical Solutions for Machining and Metal Working

What chemistry does a machine shop need?

Cleaners and degreasers for parts and equipment, metal preparation chemistry for surfaces going to coating or assembly, defoamers for coolant and wash systems, water treatment for any heating and cooling plant, and sanitation chemistry. Coolant management is where most shops have the biggest recoverable cost.

Why does our coolant go bad so quickly?

Usually bacterial growth in a sump that is too warm, too dilute, or holding tramp oil. Tramp oil blankets the surface and creates the low-oxygen conditions anaerobic bacteria need, which produces the Monday morning smell. Skimming tramp oil and controlling concentration usually does more than adding biocide.

How do we get rid of the smell in our coolant sumps?

Fix the cause rather than mask it. Remove tramp oil, correct concentration, clean the sump properly during a changeout rather than just topping up, and check the water you are mixing with. A sump recharged with the same biofilm still in it goes off again quickly.

Why is foam building up in our parts washers and coolant?

Soft water, over-concentration, high-pressure delivery and carried-over cleaning chemistry all promote foam. Foam reduces cooling and lubrication at the tool and interferes with wash coverage. A low-dose defoamer matched to the system handles it, but it is worth checking concentration and water quality first.

What does metal preparation involve before coating or plating?

Cleaning to remove oil, coolant residue and fines, then a surface treatment appropriate to the substrate and the finish. Most coating adhesion failures in a machine shop trace to residual coolant or cutting oil that survived a cleaning stage running below temperature or concentration.

How does water hardness affect our cleaning chemistry?

Hard water ties up active ingredients in many cleaners, so the bath needs more product to reach the same performance and leaves mineral spotting on parts after rinse. We often know the water quality for a region already, so the fix is normally a formulation choice rather than a water treatment project.

Does my parts washer or wash line need water treatment?

It needs monitoring at minimum. Wash baths drift in concentration, temperature and soil loading, and they get judged by how the parts look rather than by titration. Titrating on a schedule is the single change that most improves consistency in a wash line.

What safety considerations matter with shop chemistry?

Worker exposure, ventilation, skin contact from parts handling, and compatibility with the metals and elastomers in your machines. A cleaner that works quickly but requires respiratory protection in a shop with no ventilation is the wrong product regardless of how well it cleans.

Can you help us reduce the number of products we stock?

Usually yes. Shops accumulate products one problem at a time and end up with several that do similar jobs. Consolidating reduces inventory, simplifies training and cuts the chance of the wrong drum being used on the wrong line.
