Release Agents

Newer, extreme heat asphalt processes can easily gum up your steamrollers and other equipment, delaying your projects. Our innovative release agent solutions ensure you never need to slow things down or compromise the quality of your asphalt surfaces. Our formulations, including the readily biodegradable PAVEGUARD PG, are more cost-effective than traditional diesel solutions, while outperforming and out-lasting oil or water-based lubricating soaps.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chemical Solutions for Paving and Road Maintenance

What chemistry does a paving operation need?

Asphalt release agents for truck boxes, pavers, rollers and hand tools, cleaners and degreasers for equipment and plant, and sanitation chemistry for shop and site facilities. Release agent selection is the one with the most direct effect on both productivity and equipment life.

Why should we stop using diesel as a release agent?

Because it damages the asphalt it touches, stripping binder from aggregate where it pools in the truck box, and it creates exposure, fire and environmental liabilities that most jurisdictions now treat seriously. It also damages rubber and painted surfaces on the equipment. Purpose-built release agents avoid all of that.

Do asphalt release agents affect pavement quality?

A properly formulated one does not. Diesel and other solvent-based substitutes do, because they dissolve the binder and leave a weakened area in the mat. If you are seeing premature ravelling that traces back to specific loads, the release agent is worth investigating.

How much release agent should we be applying?

Enough for a thin continuous film, no more. Over-application is common and pools in the low points of a truck box where it does the most binder damage. Measuring applied volume per load rather than per week is how most operations find they are using several times what they need.

Will release agent freeze or thicken in cold weather?

It depends on the product. Paving in a northern climate means product sitting in a tank through cold nights and shoulder season, so freeze-thaw stability and pour point are practical selection criteria, not fine print. Ask for the cold weather data before the season starts.

What cleans hardened asphalt off equipment?

A dedicated asphalt or hydrocarbon cleaner with enough dwell time to soften the binder, not a general degreaser and not pressure alone. Hardened asphalt on pavers, screeds and hand tools is a dwell time problem, and crews almost always cut the dwell short.

Is release agent runoff an environmental concern?

It can be, which is one of the practical arguments against diesel. Product applied to truck boxes ends up on the road, at the plant and on the yard. Choosing a product with a favourable environmental profile removes a conversation you would otherwise have with a regulator or a client.

Can you supply for a whole fleet and multiple yards?

Yes. Standardising release agent and cleaning chemistry across yards makes application settings consistent, simplifies training for seasonal crews, and lets you compare consumption between locations. Seasonal turnover in this industry makes standardisation worth more than it appears.

How do we get product delivered for a short season?

By planning stocking around the season rather than ordering into it. Paving operations compress a year of consumption into a few months, so we set the delivery schedule against your expected volume before the season opens rather than reacting to it.
