There’s No Challenge We Won’t Tackle

At Guardian Chemicals, we wield our decades of industry expertise, relentless pursuit of innovation, and incomparable commitment to service to transform your business.

Our solutions help reduce operational inefficiencies at every step; from reducing the time needed for regular cleanings, shutdowns and turnarounds to ensuring your storage and transportation equipment pass inspection. And we do so by using our laboratory resources to create customized solutions.

Some of these include:

  • Formulations for the removal of iron sulphide that reduces system fouling and under deposit corrosion, without releasing hydrogen sulphide from the complex
  • Solutions to tackle issues related to the accumulation of sand
  • Tank cleaning and degassing chemistry that brings H2S and LEL down before entry

Frequently Asked Questions About Chemical Solutions for Refining and Processing

What chemistry does a refinery or process plant need?

Cleaning and degassing chemistry for exchangers, vessels, towers and amine units, production enhancement and treating chemistry, hydrogen sulphide and mercaptan scavenging, metal preparation for maintenance, water treatment for cooling and steam systems, and plant sanitation chemistry.

How do you clean a fouled heat exchanger without lancing?

By identifying the deposit, screening chemistry against it in the lab, then circulating or soaking under conditions matched to the foulant and the metallurgy. Where it works, the unit is back in service far faster than mechanical cleaning allows, and our case work includes exchangers with flow restored well above the original target.

What is involved in degassing and decontamination before entry?

Converting the sulphide, stripping hydrocarbon vapour and reducing benzene and mercaptans to levels that permit entry, in a defined sequence with monitoring at each step. Chemical decontamination shortens the time to safe entry compared with ventilation alone, which is normally the constraint on the critical path.

How do we deal with pyrophoric iron sulphide?

Keep it wet and convert it chemically before the vessel is opened. Dry iron sulphide ignites in air, and the incidents happen during opening rather than during the clean. Treating it in place is a planning decision made before the outage, not a reaction during it.

What fouls amine units and what can be done about it?

Heat stable salts, hydrocarbon carryover, degradation products and particulate, which together cause foaming, corrosion and reduced circulation capacity. Cleaning the system and addressing the source of the contamination both matter, because a cleaned unit that keeps receiving carryover fouls again on the same schedule.

Why is our amine or process unit foaming?

Contamination, most often hydrocarbon carryover, degradation products or particulate acting as foam stabilisers. Foam causes amine carryover and capacity loss. A defoamer controls the symptom at low dose while the source is found, but running permanently on defoamer to mask carryover is expensive and hides a real problem.

How do you scope a turnaround cleaning job?

Through our BrightShield process. An audit establishes the system history, the baseline and the technical objectives with KPIs. The lab fingerprints the foulant. Candidate chemistries are bench screened against it with the incumbent as a comparison. Then the proposal, on-site support during application, and a validation report.

Can you work with our preferred application contractor?

Yes, and that is the usual arrangement. We supply the chemistry, the procedure and the conditions, and support the work on site alongside whichever applicator you use. The audit form asks who your preferred applicator is precisely because that relationship is already in place.

What documentation do we get afterward?

A validation report measuring the result against the KPIs set at the start, plus the lab analyses that informed the chemistry selection. Reporting against agreed measures is what makes the next turnaround easier to plan and easier to justify.
