Frequently Asked Questions About Safety Data Sheets

How do I get a Safety Data Sheet for a Guardian product?

Send us the product name and your contact details through the form on this page and our team will send the current SDS. If you are not certain which product you have, the name will be on the container label or on your invoice.

What information do you need to find the right SDS?

The product name as it appears on the label. A product code or the invoice number helps if the name is worn or partly missing. If you only have a partial name or a photograph of the label, send what you have and we will identify it.

Is the SDS the same as the product data sheet?

No, and they answer different questions. The Safety Data Sheet covers hazards, handling, storage, first aid, personal protective equipment and emergency measures. The product data sheet covers what the product does, how it is applied, and its physical properties. Ask for both if you are evaluating a product.

How often are Safety Data Sheets updated?

Whenever the formulation, classification or regulatory requirements change, and otherwise on the review cycle required by the applicable regulations. Always work from the current version rather than a copy filed some time ago, because the classification section is the part most likely to have changed.

Do you provide SDSs in French?

Tell us what you need when you request the sheet. Canadian workplace requirements cover the language of the workplace, so let us know the jurisdiction and language and we will confirm what is available for that product.

Do your Safety Data Sheets follow WHMIS and GHS format?

Yes. Sheets follow the standard sixteen-section format used under WHMIS 2015 and GHS, so section numbers correspond to the same content across suppliers. That is what makes them comparable when you are assessing two products.

Can I get an SDS if I am evaluating a product but have not bought it?

Yes. We provide Safety Data Sheets to customers and to companies assessing our products for use. Reviewing the SDS before a trial is normal practice and we would rather you did.

What if the product has been discontinued?

Ask anyway. We can usually supply the sheet for a discontinued product for records and disposal purposes, and tell you what the current equivalent is if you are looking to replace it.

Who do I contact in an emergency?

Follow the emergency information on the product’s Safety Data Sheet, which includes the emergency contact for that product. For non-urgent questions about handling or storage, call us at 1-800-661-6544 or use the form on this page.
