Treating water you could have fixed at the inlet

Chemical treatment can only do so much with the water it is handed. Hardness that reaches a boiler turns into scale, and treating it costs more chemical every month. Suspended solids foul heat transfer surfaces and shorten filter life. High dissolved solids cap how many cycles a cooling tower can run before blowdown carries the savings back out.

Pre-treatment deals with the input instead. Taking hardness, solids or dissolved minerals out before the water enters the system lowers chemical demand, holds cycles higher and gives the treatment program stable water to work with.

Softening

Removes hardness before it reaches a boiler or closed loop.

Filtration

Takes suspended solids out ahead of heat transfer surfaces.

Chemical feed and controls

Precise dosing and automated control, so treatment stays in range.

Sized for your water

Specified from your water chemistry and duty, not picked from a catalogue.

Water in to water out, from one vendor

Guardian manages treatment for the whole path water takes through your facility. We specify and install the pre-treatment equipment, supply the chemistry that follows it, and service both. One vendor is accountable for the result, so nobody is left arguing about whether the problem is the softener or the program.

Guardian had begun adding pre-treatment equipment to its water treatment programs when it acquired Northern Water Solutions in 2026. The acquisition brought in a water conditioning equipment specialist with over 30 years in the field, and the depth to specify, install and service that equipment across Alberta.

Chemical feed system before and after a Guardian Chemicals upgrade in a commercial mechanical room

Guardian programs follow Association of Water Technologies (AWT) best practices and cover the whole system: pre-treatment equipment, automated chemical feed and controls, the treatment chemistry, and regular on-site service.

One example: an Ontario contractor ran a 100 HP boiler on a truck, and its softener was letting hardness through, so the boiler scaled repeatedly and needed acid washes. Guardian specified and commissioned a twin-tank softener rated for up to 300 ppm hardness and 15 gpm with programmable controls, sized for a unit that moves between job sites and sees different feedwater. The repeat acid washes stopped, and roughly $30,000 of coil replacement risk came off the table.

DataGuard 2.0: Know What Your Systems Are Doing

DataGuard is Guardian’s data logging, analysis and reporting app, included with Guardian water treatment programs. It alerts you when a system or its treatment moves out of range, and Guardian can set up remote controllers so readings arrive on their own.

Equipment We Specify and Support

Water softeners, filtration, reverse osmosis and deionization, chemical feed systems, controllers and automated blowdown, and the sensors behind them. Guardian specifies, installs, commissions and services the equipment, and supplies the chemistry that runs through it.

What Building Operators Say About Guardian

“Guardian Chemicals are the best. I’ve been using them for the past 8 years, no complaints. I take them wherever I go, if they aren’t onsite already. They’ll support any request you have as well as recommend what’s best for your building or plant.”

“With Guardian, knowing that the water is good in all our buildings now and our cooling towers are performing as they should be is what I value most. It wasn’t like this before we brought Guardian in.”

"Before starting with Guardian, we were experiencing issues with Legionella and Corrosion in our systems. Things have improved a lot over the last 2-3 years and we are very happy with the outcome."

Frequently Asked Questions: Water Pre-Treatment Equipment

What is water pre-treatment?

Treating the water before it enters your system: removing hardness, suspended solids or dissolved minerals so your boiler, cooling tower or closed loop starts from stable water.

Do I need a softener?

It depends on your feedwater hardness and the system. Boilers are the clearest case, because hardness that gets in becomes scale on the hottest surfaces. We look at your water and your duty before recommending one.

Does pre-treatment lower chemical cost?

Usually. Lower hardness and solids mean lower chemical demand, and better feedwater lets a cooling tower run more cycles before blowdown. The saving depends on your water and how the system runs.

Do you install and service the equipment?

Yes. Guardian specifies the equipment for your water, installs and commissions it, and services it afterwards, alongside the treatment program that runs on it.

Can you work with equipment we already have?

Yes. Often the fix is sizing, controls or regeneration settings rather than a new system. We will tell you when the existing equipment can be made to work and when replacing it is the cheaper answer.

What equipment do you supply?

Water softeners, filtration, reverse osmosis and deionization, chemical feed systems, controllers and automated blowdown, plus the sensors behind them. Tell us the system and the water and we will specify to it.

Do I need a water test first?

Often not. Most municipal utilities publish their treated water chemistry, and we start from that plus your system details. A site test gets added when it would change the equipment selection, such as confirming silica or iron.

Do you supply the treatment chemistry as well?

Yes. Guardian supplies the pre-treatment equipment, the chemical feed and controls, the treatment chemistry and the on-site service, so one supplier answers for the whole program.

How do I get started?

Send the form on this page or call (800) 661-6544. A Guardian specialist responds within one business day.
