WESP System & Chemical Treatment Solutions

Chemistry to effectively manage
Wet Electrostatic Precipitators

Caustic Soda isn’t Cutting It

Maintaining your WESP system is critical to everyday operations. There are safety and regulatory standards that need to be met.

Traditionally straight commodity caustic soda has been used for treatment, however treating a WESP with caustic soda contributes significant additional system operation and maintenance costs. You just can’t afford to waste time on ineffective cleaning chemistry.

We Keep Your WESP in Optimum Working Condition

Because no operations or systems are the same, we will work with you to develop a WESPGUARD treatment program. By studying your system, we review site-specific challenges including wood species, feed and recycle water quality, waste handling, disposal resources, foam control and overall system design. We find a formulation and site application technique that works for you. Our reps have worked throughout the industry, and are there to support you for servicing and emergency issue resolution.

Wood Mills and Engineered Wood Products

Constantly Working to Improve WESP Chemistry

Not only does scale impact your WESP system; there are also strict safety and regulatory standards that need to be met.

We are one of the only companies in North America to have developed a better WESP treatment alternative to caustic soda, as well as scale-reduction chemicals to support existing caustic soda treatments. These holistic systems reduce cycle times and chemical consumption volumes to keep your WESP working at maximum efficiency by:

  • Increasing efficiency of solids removal and centrifuge performance
  • Lowering pH operating parameters which greatly reduce foaming tendencies and defoamer consumption
  • Increase cleaning performance and preventing scaling with sequestrant, surfactant and hard water chelating
  • Improving solids removal with polymers and coagulants

Featured WESP Treatment Products

WESPGUARD SMC

Wet Electrostatic Precipitator Treatment Concentrate

WESPGUARD SMC is a combination of dispersants, scale inhibitors and cleaning agents designed to work synergistically with caustic soda to remove organics, wood particles and other contaminants from the surface of the WESP. It also will prevent the issues caused by the use of caustic soda alone—the formation of insoluble soaps and mineral scales.

WESPGUARD 9200

Wet Electrostatic Precipitator Treatment

Guardian Chemicals' WESPGUARD 9200 removes and treats organic deposits and wood particles while preventing the formation of mineral scales on electrostatic surfaces. It offers improved cleaning ability, safety and handling compared to caustic soda.

WESPGUARD 7110

WESP System Treatment

WESPGUARD 7110 is designed to eliminate scale buildup and the costly shutdowns required to remove scale. The clean ESP tubes will run more efficiently—reducing power consumption, resulting in lower operating costs.

What Is a WESP?

Wet electrostatic precipitators (WESPs) remove small wood particles, organic material and fly ash from the hot gases created when producing wood particles, chips, veneers, OSB strands, and pellets. WESPs use electrically charged tubes or plates, and if left untreated become dirty, scaled, and fouled—decreasing overall efficiency. This decrease in efficiency allows organic contaminants and wood particles to escape up the stack.

WESP Treatment You Can Count On

Leaving your WESP untreated, or using caustic soda treatments results in significant losses in efficiency and costly cleaning.

Because no two WESPs are the same, Guardian Chemicals WESPGUARD products are tailored to meet your company’s unique requirements. We study your system, review site-specific challenges, and identify the right products to maximize efficiency and reduce physical cleaning requirements.

Learn More About Our WESP Treatment Solutions

We know you have questions about WESP treatment and we want to help you find the answers. We’ve gathered some of the most commonly asked questions we receive from customers about Guardian Chemicals and WESP systems and answered them for you.

Why Is Your WESP Treatment A Better Solution Than Hot Water or Caustic Soda?

Our WESP system treatments allow your WESP to work at maximum efficiency by reducing chemical consumption and cycle times. How do we do that?

  1. We increase the centrifuge performance and the efficiency of solids removal by limiting solids formation.
  2. Our system uses sequestrants and surfactants to prevent scaling and increase cleaning performance—minimizing the need for costly physical cleaning.
  3. With lower pH operating parameters, our system reduces foaming tendencies and defoamer usage.

How often do I need to clean my WESP?

When using Hot Water or Caustic Soda treatments, costly physical WESP cleaning is often performed on a monthly basis. Under normal operating conditions, treatment with WESPGUARD, can eliminate monthly cleaning. Our clients find systems treated with WESPGUARD only need cleaning on a yearly basis.

Do You Offer Other Types of Products Besides WESP Treatment Solutions?

Yes, Guardian Chemicals has solutions for a variety of purposes, including cleaners and degreasers, water treatment products, degassing agents, defoamers, descalers and more.
